Goals for Barcelona
672 goals for a single club — the most anyone has scored for one team in the history of the game. It took seventeen seasons and 778 appearances, all in the shirt he had worn since he was thirteen years old.
Before him, the Barcelona record belonged to César Rodríguez, who scored 232 goals between 1942 and 1955. Messi did not just edge past that number. He nearly tripled it.

Goals in a calendar year
91 goals in a single calendar year — 79 for Barcelona and 12 for Argentina, all in official competition. Guinness World Records recognised the mark as it happened, in 2012.
The previous record belonged to Gerd Müller, who scored 85 goals in 1972. Messi broke it forty years later, by six — and added another five goals in friendlies that same year, which the official count does not include.

Argentina caps
207 appearances for Argentina — no one has worn the shirt more times, across the twenty-one years from his 2005 debut to the 2026 World Cup final. He passed the previous record, Javier Mascherano’s 147 caps, in 2021 — and kept playing for five more years.
This figure is counted differently than the club records above: national-team appearances conventionally include official friendlies, not only competitive fixtures. On that basis — friendlies included — 207 is the number.

Argentina goals
125 goals for Argentina — the most in the country’s history, and more than any other player has scored for a South American national team, a record he tied with Pelé’s 77 in 2021 and then pulled away from. Twenty-one of them came at World Cups, across six tournaments and a career that ran from his 2005 debut to the 2026 final.

Six World Cup tournaments, across twenty years: from Germany 2006, at eighteen, to the 2026 tournament in North America, at thirty-eight and then thirty-nine.
He shares the record with Cristiano Ronaldo, who also appeared in six. No other male outfield player has reached as many.

Goals in one Champions League match
Five goals in a single Champions League match, for Barcelona against Bayer Leverkusen at the Camp Nou, on the seventh of March, 2012. Barcelona won 7-1.
He needed twenty-four minutes for the first three. Erling Haaland and Luiz Adriano have since matched the number; no one has beaten it yet.

World Cup goals — second in the competition's history
Twenty-one World Cup goals, across six tournaments and twenty years.
For twenty-six days he was the competition’s all-time leading scorer. He equalled Miroslav Klose’s record of sixteen with a hat-trick against Algeria on the sixteenth of June, 2026, and passed it six days later with a brace against Austria. Kylian Mbappé overtook him on the eighteenth of July, the day before the final.
It is the only record on this page that is not his. It is here because the twenty-six days happened, and because the figure — second in the entire history of the tournament — stands on its own.

422 assists in competitive matches, as of the thirtieth of July, 2026 — more than any player in the game’s recorded history.
He tied Ferenc Puskás’s total of 404 on the twenty-fourth of November, 2025, in a 4-0 win over Cincinnati, and passed it six days later to stand alone at the top. Assist records from Puskás’s era were reconstructed after the fact rather than logged as they happened, so the comparison is indicative, not forensic — the modern figure itself is not in doubt.
A separate assist count kept for this project, built match by match, arrives independently at 408, and documents exactly ten more Inter Miami appearances it has not yet been able to source individually. 408 plus that acknowledged gap comes within single digits of this total — two independent counts landing in the same neighbourhood once a known gap is accounted for is stronger evidence than either alone.
